Summer is officially here, and the Tulsa Metro area is humming with activity. Whether you are a lifelong Tulsan, a newly relocated family getting orders to the area, or a first-time homebuyer trying to scout out your perfect next neighborhood, getting out into the community is the best way to truly feel at home.

As a veteran, I'm all about having a solid plan and execution strategy. So consider this your official June community briefing. Grab your sunglasses, rally your squad, and check out these incredible local activities happening right in our backyard this month.

1. The Crown Jewel of Summer: Tulsa Tough (June 12–14)

If you want to experience Tulsa's community spirit at absolute maximum volume, Saint Francis Tulsa Tough is an absolute must. This three-day cycling festival takes over the streets of downtown and the Riverside district.

  • The Vibe: High-octane, electric, and incredibly welcoming. Even if you don't know a thing about professional cycling, the spectator energy—especially at Cry Baby Hill on Sunday—is something you have to see to believe.

  • Pro-Tip: It's a fantastic way to explore the Riverview and Brady Heights neighborhoods on foot while cheering on riders from all over the world.

2. Honor & Heritage: Juneteenth Festival (June 18–20)

Tulsa's historic Greenwood District plays host to the annual Tulsa Juneteenth Festival, a powerful celebration of freedom, community resilience, and African American culture.

  • The Vibe: Family-friendly, educational, and deeply moving. The event features live music, local art displays, historical exhibits, and incredible food trucks.

  • Pro-Tip: Take some time to walk through the Greenwood Rising Black Wall Street History Center while you are there. It's an essential piece of our city's history.

3. Cool Down at Gathering Place

When the Oklahoma June heat kicks into high gear, there is no better strategic retreat than Gathering Place. Routinely voted one of the best park spaces in the entire country, it offers something for literally every generation.

  • The Vibe: Active, beautiful, and completely free. You can rent kayaks or pedal boats on Peggy's Pond, explore the massive ONEOK Boathouse, or just enjoy a shaded walk along the Midland Trail.

  • Pro-Tip: Keep an eye on their summer calendar for Friday night movie screenings on the lawn and live local music sessions.

4. Beat the Heat: Morning Hikes at Turkey Mountain

If you love the outdoors but want to avoid the midday sun, change your alarm clock and head to the Turkey Mountain Urban Wilderness Area.

  • The Vibe: Rugged and refreshing. With miles of dirt trails, beautiful canopy coverage, and panoramic views of the Arkansas River, it's the perfect place to clear your head, get a rucking workout in, or walk the dogs.

  • Pro-Tip: Stick to the yellow or pink trails if you want a clearly marked, scenic route that gets you back to the main parking lot before the heat index peaks.

The Bottom Line

Tulsa isn't just a spot on a map; it's a tight-knit community built on camaraderie, growth, and neighbor-helping-neighbor pride. That's exactly why I chose to plant my roots here after my time in the military, and why I love helping people find their own perfect basecamp in this city.
